New Director Named for the National Gallery of Canada

The new director of the National Gallery of Canada has been announced. The CBC reported early this morning that it had learned the directorship would be going to Alexandra Suda. Suda is the first woman in more than 20 years to lead the NGC—the last one was Shirley Thomson, who departed the gallery in 1997. Read More

Governor General's Award Winners Announced

The winners of the 2019 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts were released early this morning. In total, seven artists and one curator are being honoured.

The media the winners work in vary widely—from glass art to boreal-forest poetry to nationwide billboard exhibitions. And the themes they have addressed span a wide range as well, including residential-school injustices, AIDS impacts, the Komagata Maru incident, and more. Read More

More Youth Visit Art Galleries 

In his 20 years as an arts researcher, Kelly Hill of Hill Strategies Research has read—and written—a lot of studies on cultural participation and engagement.

But when Hill was examining new data recently to complete a just-released study on arts audiences in Canada, he found some of his own expectations upended.

“A stunning finding of this report is that youth tend to attend a lot of different arts forms in higher proportions than older people,” says Hill, “which kind of flips our expectations of who goes to arts events.” Read More

Take action – Province Cuts $15 Million to OTF budget

The government has just put your community at risk by withdrawing a promised $15 million to Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF); money that would have been granted out to community projects. Funding that would have strengthened communities won’t be distributed. Like funding to fix the ice rink roof, support a local festival, buy community play equipment, provide meals to vulnerable people, and create jobs. David Tsubouchi appointed to the Ontario Arts Council board of directors

David Tsubouchi of Baltimore, Ontario, was appointed to the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) board of directors in mid-December 2018. David is a former Ontario cabinet minister and MPP for Markham. Notably, he served as Ontario’s Minister of Culture under Premier Ernie Eves in 2003, having previously held several other cabinet posts. 

University of Waterloo researchers find that drawing is better than taking notes for memory retention

“The researchers say even four-second drawing can help people recall a word, and they believe the technique could be useful for people with dementia,” CBC reports. Read More
