Take action – Province Cuts $15 Million to OTF budget

The government has just put your community at risk by withdrawing a promised $15 million to Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF); money that would have been granted out to community projects. Funding that would have strengthened communities won’t be distributed. Like funding to fix the ice rink roof, support a local festival, buy community play equipment, provide meals to vulnerable people, and create jobs. Alberta declares January the Month of the Artist 

“Alberta is the first province in Canada to dedicate a month to celebrate artists. It is a way to raise awareness of the challenges artists face and the value they bring to our province. Art is work. Art creates jobs, and art contributes to our growing economy.” So says Alberta Minister of Culture and Tourism Ricardo Miranda as the provincial government kicks off the endeavour. Read More

David Tsubouchi appointed to the Ontario Arts Council board of directors

David Tsubouchi of Baltimore, Ontario, was appointed to the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) board of directors in mid-December 2018. David is a former Ontario cabinet minister and MPP for Markham. Notably, he served as Ontario’s Minister of Culture under Premier Ernie Eves in 2003, having previously held several other cabinet posts. 

University of Waterloo researchers find that drawing is better than taking notes for memory retention

“The researchers say even four-second drawing can help people recall a word, and they believe the technique could be useful for people with dementia,” CBC reports. Read More

A group of Ontario community health centres are taking part in a pilot program that offers social and artistic remedies — including choir classes, fishing lessons, knitting and a visit to the Royal Ontario Museum — as an alternative treatment for certain health issues such as anxiety and loneliness. In a unanimous decision, the 10-trustee York Catholic board voted to support McNicol’s motion that would see the board’s only Catholic high school in Newmarket develop a four-year specialized regional arts program to advance students’ talents and abilities in that area. Read More

ABO Welcomes Patricia McKinna as Executive Director

ArtsBuild Ontario is pleased to announce the appointment of performing arts professional Patricia McKinna as Executive Director. Patricia will be responsible for strategic leadership, human and financial resources, program support and relationship building and management. As manager, producer and consultant she brings considerable experience with both new and heritage performance spaces including Koerner Hall, Mazzoleni Hall and Temerty Theatre at The Royal Conservatory of Music's TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning (as founding GM of RCM Performing Arts). She holds undergraduate degrees from Mount Allison University, a graduate degree from UOttawa, a diploma from The Royal Conservatory of Music, and certificates from Mount Allison, La Sorbonne.
